Angelina Elise is an artist, musician, and enthusiast of “Olde Time” aesthetics. She brings Jonny Mayo along for the ride to chat with Brodie and Bob about “bicycles, beer, cats and mustaches” and how they inform her art.

Also, bike culture in L.A., square dances, bartering, artist collectives, how Angelina and Brodie met during the days of shows at Hyperion Tavern, Brodie’s recent Twitter wars with self-described “conservatives,” Jonny’s creations as a machinist, and the music of Triple Chicken Foot, who will be leading an “Old Time Jam” at the artist reception for this Friday’s “Americana Hicksters,” an art show by Angelina being held at Jet Studios in Long Beach.

This is an image from Raymond Pettibon’s first comic book, “Captive Chains.” Ewa Wojciak was nice enough to bring a copy from her personal collection when she visited the show.

Of course, as a Black Flag fan, I was well aware of Pettibon’s work. Not only did he design their legendary logo, but also their album covers. I kick myself for not picking up Raymond Pettibon: The Books 1978-1998 when I saw it for a reasonable price at Eastside Records in Tempe, AZ so many years back.
Check out more of his work at RayPettibon.com, read The Believer’s 2004 interview with him, which includes him convincing the interviewer that he raises dogs for fighting, and also read these more recent profiles from Interview Magazine and Vice, the latter of which includes pictures of Pettibon in his studio and another outrageous story, this time involving a swastika prison tattoo during time served in Pelican Bay for copyright violation.

Ewa Wojciak (No Magazine, Beatnik Bookster) has organized the second incarnation of the historic independent publishing event Shelf Life.

Her and fellow organizers, artists Yuri Ogita and Meagan Chin, join Brodie to discuss early Los Angeles punk, DIY and zine culture, street art, the constant struggle between underground integrity and commercialization to expand audiences…

…NOMAG and the work of Wojciak’s late partner Bruce Kalberg (a.k.a. Bruce Caen, author of Sub-Hollywood), and the participants, workshops, and speakers at Shelf Life 2, happening this Saturday, March 24, on the USC campus.

Also, the music of Redd Kross.

Alex Chiu (“Eyeball Burp”), Keenan Keller (“Whore Eyes,” “Galactic Breakdown”), and our old pal Tom Neely (“The Blot,” “The Wolf,” “Henry & Glenn Forever”) join Gene and Brodie to chat about L.A. Zine Fest, running through February. Alex discusses his exhibit at Flock Shop on Feb. 11, Keenan & Tom discuss their readings upstairs at The Last Bookstore on Feb. 18, and we also cover independent publishing of comics and zines, outsider art, sex cults, proper use of the word “utilize,” & Gene’s next adventure in parenting as he takes a hiatus from Shakeytown Radio. Also, music by Tom’s project, Self Indulgent Werewolf.

DeviantArt creeps me out too much. Everybody there has gone insane. There’s never been a time in my life when I thought to myself, “What that cartoon horse needs is a form-fitting dress and a nice pair of boots.” Because they’re horses, not people. It’s insane to want to make the horse hotter than it already is.
I did not mean to imply with that last sentence that the horse is already hot enough as it is.
Few things in this world are as terrifying to me as the thought of a sexy horse.
