Mishka Shubaly has published a 33-page true story about his 2001 adventure at sea, and eventually, on a deserted island. It’s got drunkenness, despair, and doom, and that’s all even before he’s stepped onto the boat.

I love this man. Give him two dollars. It’s worth every cent.

I met Mishka Shubaly the same way I met my wife Megan, getting booked on a show at Four White Walls in Phoenix AZ. In both cases, a touring musician with a difficult surname won me over, and we formed a bond that lasts to this day - but while I ended up marrying Megan, I think I got a kiss from Mishka much earlier in the relationship.

We have played quite a few shows together since, both in Phoenix and in L.A. He has been a part of many bands (Beat The Devil, Fresh Kills, RIBS), but I have always most enjoyed his solo work. He has been a guest in my home and a host to my wife and I on our visit to his home turf, New York. He has entertained me with hilarious stories and shared both whiskey and advice when it was much needed. As a journalist for New York Press, he has reminded me that keeping up with my writing is just as important as keeping up with my music.

Today is Mishka’s birthday. The song on today’s post, “Stupid Dreams,” always reminds me, it’s never too late to snatch failure from the jaws of defeat.

Happy birthday, brother.
