Thanks to everybody! Annie, Angela, Elliot, and all the great folks at Blood Orange Infoshop and this year’s Riverside DIY Print Fest!

brodiefosterhubbard:

Riverside DIY Print Fest (diyprint.org) is a free event celebrating independent and self-publishing at the Blood Orange Infoshop (3485 University Ave, Riverside CA 92501) this Saturday, May 26 from noon to 4PM. There will be workshops, screenprinting, a display of Raymond Pettibon’s work, and of course, zines galore.
There will be storytelling and readings, including something from me at 1:15 PM. I have been writing something for the last few months that I am looking to complete and publish this summer. I will be sharing some excerpts.

If you listen to the podcast and have been paying close attention, you’ll have heard hints from others on the show about what I’m writing about.
I’d make this a contest where you can guess, but I have no prize for you. EXCEPT MY HEART.

Shakeytown Radio Hour: Ryan McKee and Ron Babcock (1 hr, 45 min)

Gene George is back from paternity leave! Libby Ward is new to the Shakeytown Radio team! Ron Babcock, who was our third-ever guest, returns for a second appearance! Ryan McKee visits from New York for his first Shakeytown Radio interview!

Before their success on the East and West Coasts, Ryan and Ron founded Modest Proposal, a comedy partnership with a magazine and live show, several years ago in Phoenix, Arizona. On this inebriated episode, Ryan talks about his forest service past and MTV.com present. Ron and Ryan recall their semester at sea, joining comedic forces and becoming zinesters, Brodie’s involvement with ModProp, and breaking up the band. Also, embarrassing personal stories about Ron, Ryan, Brodie, and all the romantic partners they fought with, or fought for, or fought over with each other.

Featuring the music of Pissed. (RIP Joel) [photo: Profane Existence]

“I want to talk a little bit about extremism in American politics today… I’m not entirely against it.”
The picture above is Dr. Joel Olson, author of The Abolition of White Democracy, speaking in December 2010 in Sedona, Arizona, giving a lecture entitled Extremism and American Politics: Abolitionists, Jihadis, and Tea Parties.

Today at brodiehubbard.com, a few words about the passing of Dr. Joel Olson… zinester, punk rocker, anti-racist activist, political science professor, and one of the nicest and smartest guys I ever met.

This is an image from Raymond Pettibon’s first comic book, “Captive Chains.” Ewa Wojciak was nice enough to bring a copy from her personal collection when she visited the show.

Of course, as a Black Flag fan, I was well aware of Pettibon’s work. Not only did he design their legendary logo, but also their album covers. I kick myself for not picking up Raymond Pettibon: The Books 1978-1998 when I saw it for a reasonable price at Eastside Records in Tempe, AZ so many years back.
Check out more of his work at RayPettibon.com, read The Believer’s 2004 interview with him, which includes him convincing the interviewer that he raises dogs for fighting, and also read these more recent profiles from Interview Magazine and Vice, the latter of which includes pictures of Pettibon in his studio and another outrageous story, this time involving a swastika prison tattoo during time served in Pelican Bay for copyright violation.

Ewa Wojciak (No Magazine, Beatnik Bookster) has organized the second incarnation of the historic independent publishing event Shelf Life.

Her and fellow organizers, artists Yuri Ogita and Meagan Chin, join Brodie to discuss early Los Angeles punk, DIY and zine culture, street art, the constant struggle between underground integrity and commercialization to expand audiences…

…NOMAG and the work of Wojciak’s late partner Bruce Kalberg (a.k.a. Bruce Caen, author of Sub-Hollywood), and the participants, workshops, and speakers at Shelf Life 2, happening this Saturday, March 24, on the USC campus.

Alex Chiu (“Eyeball Burp”), Keenan Keller (“Whore Eyes,” “Galactic Breakdown”), and our old pal Tom Neely (“The Blot,” “The Wolf,” “Henry & Glenn Forever”) join Gene and Brodie to chat about L.A. Zine Fest, running through February. Alex discusses his exhibit at Flock Shop on Feb. 11, Keenan & Tom discuss their readings upstairs at The Last Bookstore on Feb. 18, and we also cover independent publishing of comics and zines, outsider art, sex cults, proper use of the word “utilize,” & Gene’s next adventure in parenting as he takes a hiatus from Shakeytown Radio. Also, music by Tom’s project, Self Indulgent Werewolf.

Thanks to Greg (of Absent Cause Zine) for the picture!

Here are the awesome folks behind the “Hoax” zine I mentioned in the most recent episode of the podcast. I picked up their publication at a radical bookstore in New York called Bluestockings.
Go to hoaxzine.tumblr.com:

a collaborative zine attempting to bring feminism into everyday life & finding the connections between us despite our differences.

“The revolution will not be televised” - maybe it won’t even be on a podcast! But the seeds are being planted in blogs and zines from all sorts of walks of life with all sorts of voices. Check out what Sari, Rachel, and the “Hoax” contributors have to say.
